I was shopping in Austria some years ago and I saw some knee socks in the window - just what I wanted to go under my slacks. I went in and asked for Kniehosen. The assistant laughed and said what I wanted was Kniestrümpfe - Kniehosen are the short leather tros worn by men in Austria. I have never forgotten - I find that making mistakes is a good way to learn!
