I was at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 when Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was tragically killed on the day of the opening ceremony, during training.

He was attempting to become the first luger from his country to compete at a Winter Olympics.

Well, a Kumaritashvili has made history in these Games as Nodar's cousin Saba is racing and has completed his first run. You could just see a little smile when he took his face shield off after crossing the line.

He won't be troubling the podium but this run was about so much more than that for the extended Kumaritashvili family.

The women's normal hill individual ski jumping is nearing its finale.

The athletes are on their second run and those with the highest scores from run one go last in a bid to post a huge total.

Here's the leader from round one, 's Katharina Althaus. She looks ice cool I think you'll agree. That ski mask hides emotion and she looks part daredevil ski-jumper, part poker player.

Althaus has been vocal in pushing for gender equality in the sport, raising earnings and calling on authorities to rearrange Covid-hit events for women at the same pace they do for men.

The men's moguls is down to the elite 12 names - they'll all descend the course again and six will qualify for the final. You can watch this on BBC One or at the top of this live page now.

"He just had so much positive energy, he spread that on everyone in the room with him, he was just a really funny and happy guy.

"Back in Pyeongchang in 2018 he was my room mate – it was my first Games and I was super nervous and always spent time chatting with him, he just had that energy and was really relaxed and had a great laugh always."

I think it was a fast race but Farrell looked tired at the end. Maybe if he had moved earlier he would have been in the pack but he had nothing at the end.

It has been a bit of a disappointing day for the team but there are more distances to go so it is about reassessing and coming back stronger.

It's not been Team GB's day in the short track speed skating so far, with two crashes and a fourth place finish.

Here is how Kathryn Thomson crashed out on the first lap of the women's 500m heats.

All three athletes are competing in other distances though so this is not the end of their Games.

Disappointment for Farrell Treacy, who was pushing for second at one stage but faded in the penultimate lap to cross the line fourth.

China's Ziwei Ren was the winner, with 's Quentin Fercoq the second qualifier.

I didn't know this but apparently you need a body mass index of at least 21 to take part in ski jumping.

While that yard stick may be in place, it is seen as advantageous to be as light as you can and that's why reigning Olympic champion - Norway's Maren Lunby - is not competing here in the women's normal individual ski jumping.

She said making the weight might jeopardise her health this time around and in her absence the 's Katharina Althaus just jumped a whopping 105m to score 121.1 points and top the standings.

Three Slovenian athletes occupy second to fourth. We are halfway through and the athletes' second and final jump will begin shortly.

Now it is time for Niall's older brother Farrell Treacy.

He is in heat two along with Ziwei Ren of China, 's Quentin Fercoq Jens van 'T Wout of the Netherlands.

Time to get the remote out again - switch over to BBC Two for the rest of the action on day one of Beijing 2022.

Janghyuk Park of Korea and American Andrew Heo finish in the top two.

Itzhak de Laat of Netherlands is third and could qualify as one of the fastest third-placed finishers.

Huge disappointment Niall Treacy, who crashed out so close to the line.
