Well folks, that's your lot for today, and what a moving day it was for Scottie Scheffler, who made what could be a decisive move on his back nine to take a commanding three-shot lead at the US PGA Championship.

Some surprise names are chasing him, with Alex Noren in second in just his second event this year following injury, while some bigger names are just in behind.

Jon Rahm is five shots back in his best major display for a while, and consistent contender Bryson DeChambeau is six behind in a tie for eighth but with his form he could go low and really post a tough number to match.

And of course, with the Green Mile lurking, the toughest three-hole finishing stretch on the PGA Tour, it's never over till it's over at Quail Hollow, so we could see some late drama.

Scottie Scheffler in his press conference on what a third major would mean to him:

"It would mean a lot. You know, these tournaments are very important to us, and you work your whole life to have a chance to win major tournaments, any tournament for that matter, and tomorrow I have a good opportunity to go out there and try and win the golf tournament.

"But it's going to take another really good round. There's a lot of great players chasing me on the leaderboard and someone is going to put up a great round and it's up to me to go out there and have another really good round and finish off the tournament.

"Looking forward to the challenge."

More from Jon Rahm: "Me going to LIV and playing worse in majors had nothing to do with where I was playing golf. My swing was simply not at the level it had to be for me to compete. It's easier to post a score on non-major championship courses and venues, and I think when you get to the biggest stages like this one and these courses, those flaws are going to get exposed, and it did.

"There's been weeks where I was able to play better, like The Open last year. The Masters obviously wasn't a good start, but it got better as the week went on, and I'm still working and trying to get my swing to a better spot.

"But I would say even 2023, after winning the Masters, I did not play good at all until the Ryder Cup, right. So I think the problems began earlier than people think. But I'm now getting closer to a position of being comfortable. I think this week so far and this round has been a show of it."

Jon Rahm speaking to Sky Sports after his four-under 68 catapulted him into contention:

"Very pleased. I played really good golf. Today was the round I thought I was capable of.

"[The approach on 16 was] one of the best swings I've made in the past four or five years. You don't hear it often from professional golfers but that was pretty much perfection. I couldn't have hit it better. The only thing it could have done better was go into the hole but that was too much to ask.

"A really good feeling shot - and it was nice to feel that again."

On what it would mean to be first Spanish player to win the US PGA Championship: "It's deeper than that.

"I would be closing the Spanish Grand Slam. I would be the first since Seve [Ballesteros] to get to three majors and the first Spanish player to get three diferent majors. It is hard to explain how much that would mean. If I get it done tomorrow, ask me, and I'll be able to get an answer.

"Talking about a dream come true. I'm thrilled and happy to have an opportunity but there's still a long way to go."

England's US PGA Championship debutant Marco Penge says he "felt at home" at Quail Hollow, despite frustration on the greens seeing him shoot three over par on Saturday.

Despite ranking fifth off the tee and fourth from tee to green, Penge is at one over par for the tournament because he is 74th for putting, according to Data Golf.

However, after playing with America's Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley today, he told BBC Sport NI how much he'd enjoyed his round.

Bryson DeChambeau has been speaking to Sky Sports after his two-under round of 69 on day three:

"I played really well. Really disappointed with the way it ended. Could have easily made a birdie on 17 but the wind flipped. Eighteen I thought my drive was perfect and then it flew right into the bunker, which blew my mind.

"For the most part, I made some good birdies. I was right there to shoot six or seven under today but just didn't capitalise."

On what he's learned over the past year of competing at majors: "Patience. Manage the wind a bit better. It's something I've always struggled with, as I fly the ball so high.

"That's the next challenge - wind. If I can do that ,maybe I'll have a chance at the British Open!"

The surprising stat is that today was the first time Scottie Scheffler shot the lowest round of the day in a major championship with his 65.

Not so surprising is that Scheffler is an excellent front runner, and has converted his last eight 54-hole leads on the PGA Tour - while also of course converting his two 54-hole leads in majors into two Green Jackets.

The best players separate themselves from the pack - and that's exactly what Scottie Scheffler did over the closing stages of this round.

There was a serious jostle for position for much of day three, but a Scheffler masterclass has put him in pole position.

A card of an eagle, seven birdies and three bogeys shows how eventful it has been.

Scottie Scheffler played the final five holes in five-under (eagle, birdie, par, birdie, birdie) for a third-round 65, the round of the day at the PGA Championship.

He'll hold the lead/co-lead for the third time in a major championship, having gone on to win the Masters in 2022 and 2024.

Scottie Scheffler to Sky Sports on his approach to tomorrow:

"Just continue to try and execute. I've done a pretty good job this week of staying in the moment and grinding out really good rounds.

"That's why I'm in the position that I'm in going in to tomorrow, which is a position I'd have liked to have been in at the beginning of the week.

"So just continue to do what I'm doing and go out and execute."

Matt Fitzpatrick goes right off the tee on the 18th so has to punch a low second into the green.

It runs, and runs and runs. The Englishman plays a lovely chip and secures his four.

Matthieu Pavon finds the sand with his second and Jhonattan Vegas, who goes conservative with a three wood after making double here 24 hours ago, zips his second on to the putting surface, with a perilous ptt down the slope to come.

The Venezuelan judges the pace perfectly but the line is out and he then cruelly slides past the left edge with the return.

A poor finish for a man who was on 10 under heading into this hole on Friday, and also for Pavon, who can't save his par. Three straight bogeys for the Frenchman!

What a performance that was. So good to watch. The tournament needed someone to put a stranglehold on it - and he's firmly done that.

He's been slowly improving every day this week and then to finish like that, on this golf course?

His 11 under is Scottie Scheffler's t lowest score to par in a major after 54 holes, along with the 2022 Open Championship.

He's the only man to shoot three rounds in the 60s at this US PGA Championship after his 65 today, and to cap it all off he's got a perfect 100% record when leading going into the final round.

Surprisingly, Scheffler has only led twice before after 54 holes of a major - with both of those times being when he won his two Masters titles, and you'd have to be brave to bet against him completing the job tomorrow.

What have we just seen? We had players jostling for position for most of the day, with Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau challenging, but all of a sudden Scottie Scheffler launched an all out assault on the US PGA Championship.

He'd been playing well, just missing the odd putt here and there, but angered by his third bogey of the day on 13, he smoked his tee shot on 14 and almost bagged a hole-in-one on a par four!

After sinking the eagle he then birdied 15 and added two more on 17 and 18 and that five-under burst over the last five holes has powered him into a three-shot cushion out of nowhere.

That was thrilling stuff from the world number one.

Just money from Scottie Scheffler as he rolls the birdie putt in on the last.

That's a round of 65 to finish on 11 under and a three-shot lead for the world number one. Astonishing closing stretch from Scheffler here as he takes a stranglehold on the US PGA Championship.

Well played Matt Fitzpatrick. The Englishman grimaces as his chip on to the green travels a couple of feet further than he intended but he rolls in the return to save his par.

Jhonattan Vegas also cards a three but Matthieu Pavon slips up with a poor first putt from off the edge costing him dearly.

Did we expect anything else?

It's been a masterclass over this final four holes.

Every shot he's hit has been straight down the target.

A fantastic opportunity to stretch out a lead into Sunday.

Quail Hollow does its best to slow down Scottie Scheffler as his ball rolls into a divot on the fairway, but that's not stopping the world number one in this form, as he zings another iron right at the flag on 18.

He's got about 10 feet now to close with another birdie...

Cheers and applause for Rory McIlroy back at the ninth hole as he finishes his round off.

He's shot a one-over 72 today, closing out at +2 so far for the tournament.

It's the same mark as Xander Schauffele who he has already played with on each day of this tournament.

He could well be paired with the defending champion again tomorrow - neither of whom will have their say on the trophy this year.

The 17th may only be an 187-yard par three but there have been just three birdies here today.

And barring something miraculous the final grouping are unlikely to add to that tally.

Up first Matt Fitzpatrick goes slightly long and finds a swale to the right of the putting surface, while Matthieu Pavon also takes water out of the equation on the same side but short.

Jhonattan Vegas almost pleads with his ball to come down on the dance floor and it obliges but he'll be putting from a different zip code.
