2025 is the 100th anniversary of Sheffield United's FA Cup final win over Cardiff at Wembley.

The Blades have not won under either the famous twin towers, or arch, since... what better time to write a new page in the club's rich history than 24 May? If not, it'll mean a record fifth play-off final defeat.

Bristol City were always up against it, playing a team who finished 22 points better off in the regular season, and were on the end of the most one-sided aggregate scoreline in Championship play-off history.

The end of a season is always an emotional time, but particularly for these clubs who have been touched by personal tragedy during the campaign.

Bristol City can begin the healing process now, but for the Blades there is one more day which is guaranteed to provide ecstasy or agony - there is no middle ground.

We'll be back tomorrow night to discover whether they will face Coventry or Sunderland at Wembley in 12 days' time.

SoberCity: Bristol City punched really high and finished higher than I predicted on BBC Bristol. The owners owe the fans and coach a hell of a summer to go again now. Time to rebuild and we go again and aim higher than sixth.

Anon: Hard to understand Bristol City ers complaining about a shoestring budget - their billionaire owner has pumped huge sums in year after year to elevate them from being a midtable League One club to where they are today. Most clubs outside of the PL would swap places in a heartbeat!

Bexleylion: In answer to Bill (21:52), it was Millwall who beat all three top Championship teams. Just a shame the mighty Lions didn't have a similarly successful record against the bottom three.

Sheffield United

Blades boss Chris Wilder has been speaking in the press room at Bramall Lane:

"That was tough.

"I don't think the scoreline represented the challenge.

"They're an awkward side and technically a really good one with a smart, intelligent coach.

"We had to be good and I thought we had everything to lose. We had to make sure we got the job done.

"I didn't have to tell the players not to be complacent.

"We didn't get the press right from the off and they found the pockets and played with some freedom but after that we got a foothold and some more control.

"It was a strange one because I've not been in that situation before."

Bristol City

Liam Manning speaking to BBC Radio Bristol:

"Naturally, going into it after the first leg, we knew how difficult it was going to be. It's such a difficult place to come but I'm hugely proud of the lads.

"We came and had a go without having a bit of conviction or quality at the end of it between the boxes. Especially early on the first 15 or 20 minutes, we came out and got in some great areas but lacked quality in the final bit - whether that's composure, conviction, we lacked that.

"The frustration is probably what leads to their set pieces. It's great learning for the lads - we're a young group playing in pressurised games like this.

"If we take the lessons, reflect and we're honest with ourselves and step up and take responsibility, it will only make the lads better."

Sheffield United

Kieffer Moore, speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield:

"It was perfect - to a man, everyone was brilliant and the crowd was amazing. The whole atmosphere was unreal.

"We needed that first goal to really assert ourselves. When we scored, the best of our football really came out. We knew what we had to do and it was a very good, professional performance.

"We're very much buzzing and looking forward to Wembley now. We've really shown what we can do over these last two games. If we can bring that and more, we've a very good chance.

On his injury: "I jarred my knee but it's not too bad."

Gus Hamer might have won the Championship's Player of the Year award, but Harrison Burrows must have been in the conversation.

Tonight his perfect corner was headed home by Kieffer Moore before the break while after the turnaround his low ball to the edge of the box was swept home by Hamer himself.

The third goal owed everything to Burrows' perfect run and step-over, allowing Tyrese Campbell's cross to reach Callum O'Hare in space to fire home.

Burrows didn't get a hat-trick of assists, as he didn't touch the ball, but he deserved one, and this graphic shows just how important he was to United in attack on the left flank.

Sheffield United

More from Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder on Sky Sports:

"I feel for Bristol City; you look at their bench and they've had some big injuries and it's not the biggest of squads. I've got to say that they were a tough outfit to play against.

"We had the situation at their place with the sending off which helped us, but we still had to be good tonight. They put up a good fight - they've got some good players."

On preparing for the final:

"We'll do the reports and it'll be nice to relax and watch the game tomorrow [Sunderland v Coventry].

"We'll respect any team that we play in the final. It's a one-off and it'll bring the noise and excitement and everything a Wembley final will bring but we have to get the balance right.

"We can't be too emotional and that's going to be the biggest task for the players because they're bound to be excited.

"There's still a huge challenge ahead of us."

Ingy: Once the dust settles on a disappointing last five games, we'll look back on what has been our most exciting season for many years. Ultimately, our thin squad and several unfortunate injuries ensured we fell a fair way short in the end. Say it every year, but a big summer coming up.

Stevo.e: If it’s the recruitment where we failed, then there’s only one thing to do. In any other business, heads would roll.

Keith, Orlando: It could have been a lot worse for Bristol City this season. They could have been relegated, like Bristol Rovers.

Bristol City

Bristol City captain Jason Knight speaking to BBC Radio Bristol:

"It's definitely not the way you wanted to go out. Maybe a bit of naivety in the two legs, three set pieces conceded - you're never going to get anywhere with that.

"I know they're a big unit of a team but it's certainly not the way we should be conceding goals.

"When we look back, it's probably more us giving them the opportunities than them making it, so that's disappointing

"Getting into the play-offs was never easy so we don't want to get too down about it, but you want to raise the standard constantly and we know over the two legs we certainly weren't at it, really.

"There was some good football played but without some real substance towards the end of it. That's what we're going to work on over the off-season."

Gary Owers
Former Sunderland & Bristol City midfielder on BBC Radio Bristol

A bright start for the first 30 minutes - Bristol City held their own. Scott Twine had a couple of opportunities but you always thought that it would be a struggle defending set plays and that's how it turned out, really.

The first and second goals [came] directly from corners, more and less, and they just lacked that physicality throughout.

That's one thing they might have to look at next season, how they defend set plays - they got worked out late in the season and are really weak defending the far post, because they defend the near post in numbers and strongly built teams just by that.

You always felt there was the outside chance that City had to score the first goal and they didn't. Three goals - the game was probably won at Ashton Gate.

That was the end of the fairy tale.

Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder speaking to Sky Sports:

"I just spoke to the players and went look after yourselves and look after each other and then I thought if I was a player would I have a beer tonight if I was a player? 100%.

"You've got to enjoy nights like this, it's been an incredibly challenging season for us and to have a night like this at home in front of our spectators I think gives the boys a boost and the recognition that they really deserve."

Sean, Bath: This is a damning indictment of the play-off system. What an annihilation. Like when minnows with names like auto-suggested s sneak into the European competitions, Bristol City have snuck into something they are woefully miles out of their depth in.

Anon: As an Oxford United fan who saw their team scrape into fifth in League One on the last day of last season and go on to win promotion, I wholeheartedly disagree!

Derm: Hear me out: FOUR play-off spots. Prem becomes less of a closed shop, Championship has more opportunities for promotion. Either kills yo-yo'ing or makes it four clubs yo-yo'ing instead of three. Worth a risk?

Blades fans, it'll be either Sunderland or Coventry in the final at Wembley on 24 May.

Anon: Honestly, I'd have rather seen Blackburn in the play-offs. They would have put up a decent fight.

Anon: Michael Cooper left Plymouth Argyle when he found out that Wayne Rooney was the new coach. He's been a bargain for Sheffield United. Meanwhile, Argyle will be playing Stevenage next season.

Sheffield United captain Jack Robinson told Sky Sports: "It's unbelievable. It was a really good performance, it was a tough game.

"The last thing you want to do is give them an early goal. We nullified them all game, were really good at the back and clinical in the box.

"I am really proud of the lads - there were a lot of young lads in there.

"It's obviously disappointing to get 90 points and not to go up automatically but we have a great day out for the fans now.

"We'll train hard, keep in good shape, focus and keep the confidence high, then get down to Wembley."

The day started good but it got even better.

There's one final hurdle now at Wembley and whoever we play, I feel quietly confident.

Credit to how Sheffield United applied themselves in that first fixture.

The Sheffield United players and coaching staff stand behind a Greece flag in honour of former Blades full-back George Baldock who died in October.

His name was chanted throughout tonight's game and boss Chris Wilder said he "would not be forgotten" in March.
