Privacy Notice

Uncanny is produced by BBC Studios Productions Limited (“BBC Studios”), Uncanny Media and Bafflegab Productions for broadcast, use and exploitation by the BBC (the Commissioner). We are responsible for handling personal information you provide, including your contribution, in accordance with data protection law.

What information we collect and how we use it?

BBC Studios will collect and process your personal data you are sharing with us via email. We will use this information to decide if your contribution will be used in the programme and to you if we are interested in finding out any more about your story before any footage is broadcast.

Your submission may be used by or licensed by BBC Studios, Uncanny Media or Bafflegab Productions for use in connection with the Uncanny brand in podcast, television or other format without further permission. By providing us with information, BBC Studios, Uncanny Media or Bafflegab Productions may you to gather more details and your comments may be featured in a future episode.

BBC Studios relies on its legitimate interests as a media organisation to process your personal information. We will not process your personal information where your rights override our interests.

Sharing your information

Your personal information will generally be restricted to relevant of the Uncanny production team and crew, as well as the programme’s presenters, or as otherwise required by law. Where necessary, we may also share information with other BBC Studio staff and the commissioning broadcaster, with our professional advisors, and from time to time with other programmes that may have an interest in your contribution.

If you would prefer us not to share your data with other programmes please let us know and we will record this.

Retaining your personal information

The information you have provided to us, or that is later collected in connection with the production, will be used by BBC Studios for purposes related to the production of this programme. BBC Studios will securely store the information you submit for a period of 12 months after broadcast of the programme. We do this in case we wish to you about your contribution for the programme or where necessary for related purposes, such as assessing your fitness to participate in filming. If we feature your contribution on the programme then your information will be further retained for that purpose.

If we decide not to take your contribution forward your details will be deleted 12 months after broadcast. If you are selected to be part of a programme, BBC Studios and the commissioning broadcaster may retain some information relating to your contribution in perpetuity. If we believe that we may want to return to your story at a later date, we will retain your information (such as your submission, details and any other relevant information), indefinitely after broadcast, in line with our retention schedule, unless you ask us not to.
