In Spain, I wanted to ask if a shop was open. I said ¿Está aburrido?, are you bored, instead of ¿Está abierto?, are you open!

Oooh, this reminds me of my early troubles with ser and estar, both meaning to be. Ser is usually for a more permanent state whilst estar is usually for a temporary state. So many times when I was a studen I pronounced I was an alcoholic instead of saying I was drunk ... soy borracha instead of estoy borracha.
Don't forget the trap you can get into using ser with aburrido ... La profesora es aburrida means she's boring, not bored (está aburrida).
