We had some German students at the college where I worked a few years ago, here in Scotland. For some recreation, we took them out to play golf at a course beside a loch. When I heard the students say Wo ist das Loch?, I thought I'd help by pointing to the loch and saying Das Loch ist da drüben (over there). This was met by puzzled looks. It was only after the third or fourth time that the students realised what I was on about. They were in fact asking "Where is the hole?". In German Loch means hole while loch (or lake) translates as See.
