Your say - Lost for words 3l126w

Strange hobbies 5w1242

I am not very fluent in German. I have been trying to teach myself German for about a year now. I heard that getting a penpal that speaks German can help you learn it faster. So I was looking at a penpal directory online and found one interesting profile written entirely in German. I could roughly translate some of it and when I got to the part about hobbies it read what I thought was German for "to Sh*t". I was completely struck dumb. I thought, "Can that be a hobby?" I decided to check my translation on translator site and found that the word was schießen (to shoot) not scheissen (to sh*t)

This reminds me of years ago when I started learning German at school, and one time we had to read out this cartoon strip about "Ralf der Räuber". One of my friends got the sentence where he goes to hold up a bank, and ended up pronouncing the phrase "Hände hoch oder ich scheisse!"

None of us at that point knew why it was so funny - and all our teacher would say on the matter when we pressed her for the real meaning was that "well, the people in the bank would still have been very scared..."
