Rossini’s famous overture, with its beautiful central melody and thrilling conclusion is followed by a true masterpiece for the violin. Mendelssohn’s concerto has a lullaby slow movement and sparking finale, impossible to hear without smiling. It will be played by the young German violinist Veronika Eberle, who has already gained a reputation for technical brilliance and emotional depth.
Our evening ends with Tchaikovsky’s mighty Fourth Symphony. Dominated by its great opening ‘fate motif’ this is a work that not only moves the audience from darkness to light, but completely overcomes the power of fate itself, ending in a blaze of joyful celebration.
