Non-binary dancers discuss their experiences
Hear Maija Makila (Dylan) and Renee Romolo (Izzy) talk about their experiences as non-binary dancers.
What does 'non-binary' mean?
Well, most people identify as either male or female referring to both their physical anatomy and accompanying gender traits. "Binary" means "two", so therefore, “non-binary” is a term that is used to describe genders that don’t fall into one of these two categories.
Non-binary is a spectrum and can refer to many different gender identities. For example, some people have a gender that blends elements of being a man or a woman, or a gender that is different than either male or female entirely. Whereas some people don't identify with any gender at all. Some people's gender may also change over time.
Some non-binary people use pronouns such as "they/them" or "xe/xir" but others may use "he/him", "she/her" or a combination of these. If you are ever confused on what pronoun to use, it's always best to ask politely - that person would be happier that you checked.
