Make a rainbow in a glass
Legendary former BP presenter Konnie Huq s Lindsey (virtually) in the studio with her two boys to take part in a really cool science experiment. Using sugar, water and food colouring, we show you how to make a rainbow in a glass.
- 4 glasses
- A dessert spoon
- Bowl of sugar
- Bowl of warm water
- Red, yellow, green and Blue food colouring
- A funnel
STEP ONE
First, you will need to line up four glasses and add one tablespoon of sugar to the first glass, two tablespoons to the 2nd glass, three tablespoons to the 3rd, and four tablespoons to the 4th glass.

STEP TWO
Add three tablespoons of warm water to each glass and stir until sugar has dissolved. Each one of these solutions will have different amounts of sugar and that means they'll have different densities.

STEP THREE
Then add two to three drops of food colouring to each glass in this order; red - yellow - green – blue... We're almost there!

STEP FOUR
Finally, you will need to slowly pour the solutions into a flask using a funnel. Don't worry if you don't have a funnel, you can just use a drinking glass. Start with the blue solution, this is the densest so will sit at the bottom. Then add green, yellow and finally red.
