Make an Eat Me cake

Turn up to the tea party with this cake and nobody will be able to resist. It's literally asking to be eaten!

You will need
  • 265g softened butter
  • 125g self raising flour
  • 125g caster sugar
  • 280g icing sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of jam
  • A few drops of food colouring
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • Mixing bowls
  • Wooden spoon
  • 2 cake tins

To make the cake:

  • Ask an adult to heat the oven to 180C

  • Grease two cake tins with butter or line them with baking paper

  • Cream the butter and sugar together until it’s smooth and light in colour

  • Crack the eggs into a separate bowl and beat them together, then add the eggs to the mixture

  • Sift half the flour into the mixture, mix it together, then add the rest. Cream it all together

  • Divide the mixture evenly between the cake tins, and bake for 20 – 25 minutes (Make sure you use oven gloves!). To check when they’re done, put a skewer into the middle and if it comes out clean, your cakes are ready!

  • Leave the cakes to cool

  • Once cool, spread the jam over one layer, and put the second layer on top to form a cake sandwich

To make the icing:

  • Add half the icing sugar to the butter and beat until smooth, before adding the second half of the icing sugar

  • Add the milk and cream the mixture together until smooth

  • Separate a small amount into a separate bowl, mix in the food colouring, and leave until later – this will be for the writing on top of the cake.

  • Spread the rest of the icing evenly over the cake (once it’s cooled), and put in the fridge to set

  • Place the coloured icing into a plastic sandwich bag, put a tiny snip in one of the corners

  • Once the icing on the cake has set, use your piping bag to write ‘Eat Me’ on top of the cake
