I’ve always
loved the idea of a campervan, having the freedom to just hop in and go
wherever you want at the drop of a hat.
I had a
taste of being a campervan owner driving Molly, an early 1970s van, for this
week’s X-Ray. And of course, the team weren’t likely to miss an opportunity to
put me in the clobber of the time to complete the experience!
But this
campervan trip was all about getting to bottom of what was going on with other
more modern vehicles in Mold.
They were
bought by their owners to liberate them, so they could enjoy travelling the
length of the country, take time with their families, and give a new lease of
life to retirement.
But instead, the very vans that were supposed to give peace of mind and freedom are now a
source of worry, frustration and a financial ball and chain.
It’s all
down to the paintwork. And I have to say, I was shocked when I saw how bad the
problem was. We’re not just talking a few odd patches. Huge areas of the roofs
were totally bare. One owner was even afraid to wash hers, because she’d just
see more flakes of paint being washed away.
X-Ray has
brought in an expert to take a look and see what’s causing the problem, and he
has some pretty devastating news for the vans’ owners.
You can see the
full story on X-Ray, Monday 20 October at 7.30pm on BBC
