‘Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new things and share your knowledge.’

BBC Digital Technician Katherine Grant on why she loves to share her knowledge through volunteering.

“I have always taken part in voluntary work, from helping with Brownie Packs after school to working in Charity Shops between jobs. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new things and share your knowledge.

When I started working at BBC Bristol I was really happy to find out that I would have the opportunity take part in volunteering activities. Much of my learning has been from other people, and now I have the chance to do the same for others.

I am based in the Digital Village, and while my expertise is in postproduction, my overall understanding of television production allows me to connect with those interested in TV and help them get an understanding of the processes and skills needed to work in the Media.

Through the Face2Face programme I have had the chance to mentor one-on-one, introducing my mentee to post production workflows, but also interview techniques and general life and work skills.

I enjoy getting to know people, teaching them about the industry and seeing their confidence improve. I have taught groups of young people how to edit, and given them insights into the entire television production process. I think it is important to share the fun as well as the knowledge in the media, as it is the ion this generates that will inspire future media creators.

One of my proudest moments was when I used my experiences in running a YouTube channel to give a talk about utilising social media for online campaigning. I never thought when I started working at the BBC that I would be teaching people about clickbait and online branding!

The internet is the leveller in media production, but understanding how to make your media stand out and engage your audience makes the difference..

Outreach has given me the chance to use the skills I have beyond my job, both social and practical, and on my ion for the Media.

Thanks!”
