Billy Paynter's second-half header secured a League Cup win for League Two Hartlepool at Fleetwood Town.

Jake Carroll's rifled cross was nodded home at the back post by Paynter just before the hour for Hartlepool.

David Ball very nearly levelled, but he was denied twice from point-blank range by Pools keeper Adam Bartlett.

Bobby Grant rattled the woodwork from a free-kick in added time but ultimately there was no way back for the League One side.
