Nightingale wards were named after Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of modern nursing.
The Odames Medical Library at the Leicester Royal Infirmary was once a Nightingale ward built in around 1907 after a generous donation of £6,000 from local benefactor Samuel Odames.
Nightingale wards were named after Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of modern nursing who advocated for such designs in her 1863 ‘Notes on Hospitals’. They were designed to facilitate easy observation and supervision of patients by nursing staff.
