The doctors said he’d never walk again — but Keith defied the odds to become a champion climber

26 September 2017

Keith Lynch’s life was changed forever by a skydiving accident in 2010. He suffered breaks in his back and leg before developing septicaemia. Surgeons were forced to remove 80 percent of the muscle from his calf and 60 percent from his quadriceps.

He awoke from a coma to be told that he was unlikely ever to walk again. His response to this devastating news? ‘That’s not an option.’

Keith, who lives in Penicuik in Midlothian, overcame the challenge of walking, but didn’t stop there. In 2013, he took up climbing and has since become a Scottish champion, winning a place on the Great British team where he competes against the world’s best in international events like the Paraclimbing Cup.
