A 16-year-old boy has died after being struck by a car in Sheffield.

The boy was hit as he walked alongside Staniforth Road in Darnall at about 16:50 BST on Wednesday and died from his injuries after being taken to hospital for treatment, South Yorkshire Police said.

An 18-year-old man who was riding an e-bike was also hit and suffered serious injuries.

Officers said the driver of the car, which was a grey Audi, failed to stop at the scene, adding a man and woman in their 40s were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remained in custody.

Footage which circulated online in the aftermath of the incident appeared to show a car move to the wrong side of the road and then collide with a number of people when it mounted the pavement, before being driven off.

One local resident, Mrs Khan, who said the boy who died worked at the nearby Shansha Red sweet and snacks shop on Staniforth Road, said: "I heard a car screeching down the road, but that's normally just people speeding down the road, so I didn't bother looking out of the window.

"Then I heard people shouting, 'call an ambulance' and there was quite a group of people when the emergency services came."

Mrs Khan said she had lived on the road for eight years, but no longer felt safe.

"You feel scared to walk down now, especially having children, and I am worried as there are no traffic lights here to make people slow down."

Another resident said: "We normally let our children go to mosque at 11 and 12 years old to give them a bit of freedom as it is only up the road, but we're scared now."

Meanwhile, Mojid Khan, owner of Sunrise Catering Supplies, located on the corner of the road where the incident took place, said the incident was "quite disturbing".

"It's a close-knit community here, and I'm sure the family, who will be suffering terribly as it is, will be hit even harder by the fact that Eid is tomorrow. It is really sad for them," Mr Khan said.

'Tragic incident'

Det Ch Insp Andy Knowles, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "We know this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community.

"Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones following this tragic incident.

"Our investigation into what happened is continuing at pace and we currently have a scene in place on Staniforth Road as we continue to piece together the circumstances.

"We are aware of speculation being shared online, as well as footage of the incident, and we ask of the public to withhold from speculating or sharing footage, which may cause distress to the boy's family."

Anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage was asked to police.
