This evening's concert opens with Joseph Haydn's Overture to an English Opera before the charismatic young pianist Hannes Minnaar s us for the first of two performances of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, the second following on Saturday in Manchester.

The programme is completed by Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony known also as the Scottish. Written by Mendelssohn at the age of 20 when he first visited England, this work was inspired by one specific Scottish impression that evolved into an ingenious symphony.
