ESCAPE INTO MYTH & MELANCHOLY.
A tale of courage with a cross-dressing heroine. A Greek demigod, restyled on art deco lines by a genius who transcended cultures. And a jazz-fuelled night ride through the imagination of playwright Samuel Beckett. It’s all here, because there’s no story that music can’t tell in the hands of a visionary composer and performers who mean every note.
Chief Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth directs Beethoven’s Leonore overture and Stravinsky’s Orpheus, with Martin Robertson as soloist in the moody, imioned sax concerto that Mark-Anthony Turnage wrote specially for him. There’s a bonus item too, an explosive homage to Beethoven from one of the world’s most exciting – and unpredictable – living composers, Unsuk Chin.
This concerts ends at approximately 9:10pm.
