Opening this evening is Stravinsky's Bach-inspired Concerto in E-flat - ripe with jazzy syncopations and youthfully buoyant. Subtitled Dumbarton Oaks, it takes its moniker from the estate of Robert and Mildred Bliss who commissioned the piece for their thirtieth wedding anniversary.
Pulcinella is the second of two pieces from the Russian born composer this evening. “Pulcinella was my discovery of the past," the composer wrote, “the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. It was a backward glance, of course," he later said, "but it was a look in the mirror, too."
This concert is a live broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and part of #TheBaton day.
Please note that Thierry Fischer was originally due to conduct this evening but has been replaced by Jamie Phillips.
